What is Cadaver Training?
Cadaver dog training involves teaching dogs to detect the scent of human remains. They do this by locating the scent particles in the air and following them to the source. Cadaver dogs can work both on and off lead and will work in versatile environments including buildings, farmyards, farmland, forestry and will generally wear either a harness or a high visibility jacket.
Cadaver training starts on land, first on the surface then, buried. Later you may even work up to working your dog on boat to look for scent sources in the water!
One huge benefit of Cadaver training is that you don’t need a second person to train. Once you have a scent source, you can train with just you and your dog!
Your dog does not need any level of obedience to take part.
What Equipment will I Need?
Cadaver dog training is a little more flexible in what equipment is needed. I do recommend specific equipment to help build the dogs association between the gear and job its being asked to do.
You dog can work on a lead, a long line or off lead. Initially I would recommend a long line. However, the line should be slack and not with tension like Mantrailing.
Jacket or Harness: Either
Reward: Food to begin with. We will introduce a toy reward in the future.
Can my dog do this along with Air Scent and/or Mantrailing?
Mantrailing and Cadaver Training work very well together. We call this cross training. This is true for whether you are training for Sport or Operational Reasons.
Air Scent and Cadaver training will work well too for Sport but if you are thinking of getting into Operational SAR Dog work with your dog, please chat to me first.
Suitable for Reactive Dogs?
Yes, absolutely. We’ll have the course in a quiet location until you dog is into the game. Then we will look to change environments over time to proof the training.
Training Schedule
4-week course to include detailed weekly theory and discussion plus in person training. We’ll keep the group small at 6 participants for in person training.
